Headaches and Naps--An Update
I have a horrible pollen headache. It starts from the base of my scull and ends in the space between my eyes, right under the bridge of my nose. It is not bad enough to be debilitating, but it is bad enough to make me not want to do anything. And let me tell you, since I am a little dynamo, always wanting to be off the couch and moving, this is very frustrating. O.K. so maybe that was a little lie. (What? Brad may read this and he knows all my secrets? What? Jeramy may read this and he knows my adoration of THE COUCH?) O.K. so maybe that's a big lie. I have used this lovely headache which has lasted from Saturday morning (O.K. Saturday afternoon when I woke up) until right now this very moment as a wonderful excuse not to do anything.
This weekend--Saturday I looked at the lawn, the dead weeds shriveled and scoffing at me (Brad applied Weed and Feed; good stuff), and I thought, "Brad is busy at an Academic Team tournament. He really does not need the pressure of the lawn this weekend. I really should mow the grass for him. Oh, but what is that? I believe I have a Headache. I guess we, and the neighborhood association, will just have to live with the dead weeds yet another week." Sunday, I went to church, taught our Sunday school class since Brad was in bed really sick (really I just shared an article about how God works through weakness; Aaron, Emily, and Suzanne apparently were very passionate. Hooray for me!), and then I was supposed to work on my 10-15 page paper that is due this Thursday. But, alas, again The Headache attacked. I HAD to get McDonald's for lunch (Weight Watchers?), and then sprawl out on the lovely, comforting, warm, enveloping couch and take a Sunday Afternoon Nap, which turned into a Sunday Evening Nap. I ended up only getting two pages written. But, what could anyone expect? It was Sunday, there was a couch nearby, and I had a headache. Come on. I am not a super human.
Yesterday, I made it through an entire day of school with The Headache. I, of course, teach a group of children who are known as being loud, smelling badly, and occasionally squealing or screeching. Since my students are working in groups, there was a lot of really loud eighth-grade communication going on (If you have not heard this phenomenon before, just imagine a gaggle of squawking geese hovering just above your head. Eighth-grade noise can be very similar.). What choice did I have after I returned home after all of the suffering I had gone through? Of course, I had to allow the couch to wrap its loving arms around me and shield me from the cold, hard, loud world of teaching. Of course, I had to pull up my shirpa blanket and allow myself to drift into blissful sleep. Paper? What I have paper due? What it is 50 percent of my grade? Please, you don't understand. I have a Headache, I have had it all day, and I teach children who squeal.
Today, it has been rainy wet all day long. This has exacerbated The Headache. Therefore, not only do I have The Headache, it is also coupled with Inability to Concentrate and irritability. Plus, trying to get rid of The Headache this morning, I took two Sudafed and two Advil. I asked Kathy, the junior high secretary, if she thought this combination would kill me and she confidently said, "no." It did not fully kill me, but it did leave me in an odd vegetative state for the entire afternoon. I was in my classroom, I saw my students, and most importantly, I heard my students, but I lacked the capacity to communicate with them. Then Brad twisted my arm, held me at gun point, and made me go out to eat Chinese food instead of cooking (I use this term loosely for what I do to food) the pork loin I had defrosting in the refrigerator. But, again, what could I do? I had a Headache, my husband was insisting on Chinese food, and I can't cook. Plus, if I don't cook, there are no dishes to do, and I can get to my nap sooner. So, alas, I have been asleep on the couch from the time we got home from eating until now (almost 9:00; this has to be GREAT for my diet). I still have The Headache and now my paper due date is also pounding me on the head along with the pollen and the low (or is it high?) pressure system. Do you think I can write an entire 10-15 page paper that is 50% of my grade in one night? I think I might have to. You see, I have a Headache.
What would my life be like without pollen?
